Have you read our report exploring the lived experience of single individuals serving in the Royal Air Force?

Based on evidence and testimony shared directly with us by RAF personnel, this report highlights themes of inequity and disparity, with a particular focus on the quality of single living accommodation and how this compares with Service Family Accommodation. It also reflects the wider impact these experiences can have on morale, wellbeing and people’s decisions about whether to stay in Service.

Single personnel make up a substantial proportion of the RAF community. However, their experiences are sometimes less visible in discussions about welfare, support and quality of life. This report seeks to address that by bringing together lived experience in a clear, evidence-based way.

As an independent organisation, the RAF Families Federation exists to listen to RAF personnel and families and to raise issues where there appears to be a disconnect between policy intent and lived reality. While we work closely and constructively with the RAF and the MOD, our independence is fundamental to our credibility and to the trust people place in us.

The report was initially shared with senior RAF leadership, including the Chief of the Air Staff and key people and welfare leads, to ensure early sight and senior awareness. Defence Housing Services have also had sight of the findings, reflecting the importance of accommodation policy to many of the issues raised.

Ultimately, this work is about fairness, dignity and doing right by RAF people. Single personnel matter, and their experiences deserve to be properly heard and understood.
