Professional childminders are urgently needed in areas across Scotland (including Moray).
If you’re looking for a new career that’s flexible and allows you to earn a salary while caring for your own family, childminding could be for you! The Scottish Rural Childminding Partnership pilot, led by the Scottish Childminding Association, is supporting the recruitment and training of new professional childminders in targeted areas of Shetland, Orkney, Western Isles, Argyll & Bute, Highland, Moray, Stirling, Dumfries & Galloway, Scottish Borders and Arran and Cumbrae in North Ayrshire which have been identified as having an urgent need for more high-quality, flexible childcare.
Childminders come from a wide range of backgrounds and many choose to join the profession to start a new career which combines running a business with caring for their own children. A career in childminding would enable you to
- work with children and support families in your local community;
- have a flexible career that fits around you and caring for your own family;
- contribute to children’s development, learning and wellbeing;
- run your own business from home
- develop new skills and qualifications
Zoe Elizabeth Thwaites switched from her career in retail is now a professional Childminder in Avoch, Highland. She said: “Becoming a professional childminder is one of the best things I’ve ever done and is a world away from my old life in retail. I have the flexibility of setting my own hours, so I work part time. Childminding enables me to earn an income and do a job that I absolutely love and fits around my own family. It’s so rewarding being part of children’s lives as they grow and flourish.”
What Support Is Available In Starting My New Business?
Those who apply and are accepted on to the new pilot initiative will be supported every step of the way by a dedicated member of the Scottish Childminding Association team who will support you through induction training and the registration process.
Through the pilot initiative, you would also receive;
- Free induction training, one-to-one support and your first year of SCMA membership
- Free start up package of three childminder specific training courses
- On completion of registration with the Care Inspectorate and HMRC, you would receive a £750 start-up grant to help cover any costs associated with setting up your new business.
- A unique package of three childminding-specific training courses
- Tailored support from SCMA’s dedicated Childminding Development Support Officers through to registration as a childminder – and beyond
- Access to free regular, online information sessions
Do I Need Any Previous Qualifications or Childcare Experience?
It is essential that you have a passion for working with and supporting the learning and development of children, but no previous childcare experience is required to become a childminder.
There are no specific professional qualifications needed although there will be induction training to complete and an ongoing requirement for completing 12 hours of continued professional learning (CPL) per year to ensure the high quality of your childminding business. All professional childminders are registered with the Care Inspectorate.

The one-to-one support I’ve received in person and online has been fantastic and has made everything straightforward.
