RAFA Rides team getting ready.

Monday 15th August 2022

RAFA Rides success! Twelve amazing months of fundraising were recognised last week when the RAF Association (RAFA) Wittering & District Branch presented £2755 to the Wings Appeal.

For over 90 years, the RAF Association has championed a simple belief; that no member of the RAF community should ever be left without the help that they need. The Wings Appeal is RAFA’s ongoing fundraising campaign that runs throughout the year. It is the fundraising arm of the Association and helps raise the vital funds needed to support serving and ex-RAF personnel and their families.

Squadron Leader Sara Jones, Officer Commanding No 3 Mobile Catering Squadron, is Chair of the RAFA Wittering & District Branch. She said:

“We are there to support serving personnel, veterans and their beneficiaries in the nearby communities, that can mean life changing welfare support, or just visit and a cup of tea, and everything in between.”

RAFA Rides is the Association’s annual cycling challenge, where riders can choose to tackle 25, 50, 75 or 100 miles, depending on their level of fitness (and optimism). The Wittering RAFA Riders raised a significant proportion of the £2,755 donated to the Wings Appeal during the 2022 challenge.

Other events included stalls at RAF Wittering Families’ Day, the Wittering Village Platinum Jubilee Event, and the Station Health and Wellbeing Day. Flight Sergeant Reece Holt is the Deputy Chair of  RAFA Wittering & District Branch, and recently received a commendation from the Association for his tireless fundraising.

Flight Sergeant Holt said:

“It’s been a frantic year; the team has made the most of every opportunity and they haven’t taken their foot off the gas. Money like this will make a real difference to so many people in the RAF family and veterans. They’ve been amazing.”

The cheque was presented to the Royal Air Forces Association by Wing Commander Jez Case, Station Commander at RAF Wittering, and collected by Mr Mike Pastor of RAFA Headquarters.

Over this year I have seen first-hand the amazing work that RAFA does support these people. The branch has made a truly outstanding effort and this money will make a tangible difference to people’s lives.”
