The RAF Benevolent Fund is helping older people to access peer support and friendship through its telephone friendship groups, in partnership with The Silver Line.

The service helps RAF veterans and wider RAF family members connect over the phone once a week, at a set time, all from the comfort of their home.

Up to six people can take part in the chats which are facilitated by trained volunteers. Topics of conversations can range from TV shows and daily life to current affairs and interests. Each group is different so when you first join we will help you find a group that is right for you.

The groups are safe and confidential and your details will never be shared without your permission. If you do meet friends and want to talk at other times you can be helped to do this outside of the group. You will not be charged for call costs.

If you would be interested in joining one of these telephone friendship groups, or know of a family/friend who might welcome some contact then please contact Sally Austin on 020 7307 3361 or email [email protected].

Testimonials from service users

“It’s a nice group. We have become friends. It’s enjoyable and quite satisfying to hear about what other people are doing. Yesterday we spoke about getting married and how it has changed over the years.”

“It’s lovely, I like it; I enjoy it. We have lovely little chats. I don’t really get anyone visiting me at home. It’s nice being in touch.”

“I have joined every Monday evening since it started. Now I look forward to the phone ringing at 7pm. I live in a block of flats, and when you live by yourself you do get lonely.”
