The RAF Families Federation were delighted to be invited to attend the opening of the new RAF Wittering Community facilities that were made possible through contributions from Nuffield Trust, RAF Association, RAF Benevolent Fund and the RAF Families Federation.
On Thursday 13th April, two projects were opened during the Annual Formal Inspection by Air Officer Commanding 2 Group, Air Vice Marshal Suraya Marshall. The opening of the RAF Wittering Allotments by Air Officer Commanding 2 Gp, Air Vice Marshal Suraya Marshall
RAF Wittering is the home of the RAF Families Federation, and we were thrilled to be able to fund fencing for the allotments. This was an opportunity for the RAF Families Federation to say ‘thank you’ to Station Commander Wing Commander Nikki Duncan and Station personnel for proving our office space.
It was great to meet Corporal John Barker who is the powerhouse behind the allotments, something that he discovered he enjoyed during Lockdown at his home in Yorkshire. Through his commitment and enthusiasm, he has developed this facility at RAF Wittering to share and develop with colleagues on the Station. There are 12 allotment spaces – some are split between friends, some are individually owned and some are used by sections. A waiting list operates for the spaces.
This is a great initiative to get people out of their offices, and enjoying the time tending the allotment. We look forward to watching the produce develop and possible initiatives that may come from this – and maybe even benefiting ourselves if there is a glut!
