The charity, Little Troopers, has launched a new online video series for parents as part of its tri-service Little Troopers Therapy Programme.
Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, the Little Troopers Therapy Programme is for military children who are struggling with the unique challenges that military life can bring and would benefit from professional therapy and support.
Videos exploring deployment, moving home and schools and building resilience
Now available on the Little Troopers website, the three short videos feature qualified therapists from The Owl Therapy Centre as they explore the topics of deployment, moving home and school, and nurturing resilience. In each video the therapists explain the emotions that children might be struggling with and how their behaviour might change at home and in school, before offering practical information and advice for parents. Each video comes with activities that families can print-out and complete together to help encourage conversation about military life, as well as showing families new coping techniques that they can use during stressful periods of change and uncertainty.
All of the activities have been taken from the bespoke one-to-one Therapy Programme that Little Troopers has developed alongside The Owl Therapy Centre to specifically address to unique challenges that military children face growing up in the Armed Forces community.
Louise Fetigan, founder of Little Troopers, comments:
“We have had a huge volume of referrals to our Therapy Programme since we opened in October 2023. It is important to us as a charity that this special programme, that is specific to military life, reaches and benefits as many military children as possible. That’s why we’ve worked with The Owl Centre to create this video series, so that we can bring the content from the Therapy Programme into the homes of thousands of British Armed Forces families, wherever they are in the world.
“The videos are perfect for families that might be waiting for a space on the Therapy Programme, or, are just going through a challenging time and would like some specific advice and ideas to help their child navigate through a deployment, house move or other tricky moment in their military journey.”
The Little Troopers Therapy Programme
The Little Troopers Therapy Programme will initially run until 2024 and benefit 600 military children with in-person therapy, including one-to-one and group sessions. Individual referrals are currently closed but will re-open at the beginning of August as the project moves into its second year.
