Armed Forces Families & Safeguarding (AFFS) is delighted to announce that the 2023 MOD Education Support Fund (ESF) bidding round is now open. The 2023 ESF bidding round is open until Friday 30 September 2022.
The fund has £3 million to award, and applications can be accepted from state schools, free schools and academies in the UK with Service pupils on roll. Applicants will be asked to provide evidence of negative impact of mobility and/or separation and how the funding would help mitigate the effects.
The bidding round will remain open until Friday 30 September 2022. We kindly ask Service parents to share details of the ESF with their children’s school.
Applications from England, Scotland and Wales should be forwarded to [email protected]
Applications from Northern Ireland should be forwarded to [email protected]
Applications can be accepted from publicly funded schools, Academies, Free Schools, Sixth Form colleges or from Local Authorities on behalf of publicly funded schools in their area. Result letters will be circulated in January 2023 with payments made to successful applicants by March 2023.
Since 2011, the ESF has distributed over £42 million. The funding awarded from the 2022 ESF supported around 23,000 Service children from all three Services. Service parents are encouraged to raise awareness of the ESF at their child’s school.

In January 2022, the MOD published its 10-year strategy for improving support to armed forces families. As part of the MOD’s efforts to support the implementation of this strategy, existing grant funding schemes designed to support Service children are being reviewed. The ESF in its current form is under review and applications may have to be submitted again through a new scheme.
