LGBT Pride flags

Thursday 25th August 2022

Cobseo Chair, Lt Gen Sir Nick Pope, met with Lord Etherton, the Independent Chair of the review into the impact the historic ban on LGBT military personnel had on veterans, on Tuesday 23 August.

Lord Etherton discussed the range of evidence already submitted from both Veterans who have been personally impacted, and from individuals who worked within the Armed Forces during the time of the ban, along with family members and friends of those who were affected. There was extensive discussion and recognition of how difficult it can be to share this evidence, potentially for the first time, and it was highlighted that as an Independent Review, such testimony is absolutely vital to work towards righting such an historic wrong.

The Review Team remain very keen to hear from all LGBT Veterans who were impacted by the ban before the call for evidence closes in mid-November, as well as those from the following groups:

  • Other military personnel who served between 1967 and 2000
  • Families, friends, and representatives of LGBT personnel who served between 1967 and 2000
  • Academics and others who work in this area
  • Organisations and third parties (charities, policy institute etc.)

All those who believe they have evidence to share are encouraged to take part online.

More information on the call for evidence.
