Great news for Service families! Homes across the UK are getting a major upgrade as part of a big push to improve military accommodation standards. The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is on track to hit its target of renovating 1,000 homes by the end of 2025.

What’s Happening and Where?

Work is already underway at locations across the UK, with priority given to homes most in need. So far, that includes:
  • Over 100 homes in Wales
  • More than 50 in Scotland
  • Around 150 in Northern Ireland
These upgrades aren’t just cosmetic—they’re tackling the big issues that matter most to families. Expect improvements like:
  • Fixing unreliable boilers and heating systems
  • Repairing leaky roofs
  • Eliminating damp and mould
  • Upgrading electrics and plumbing

Part of a Bigger Plan

This is just the start. These works deliver on promises made in the SFA Consumer Charter earlier this year and form part of the Defence Housing Strategy. Over the next decade, the MOD is investing £9 billion to modernise, refurbish or rebuild more than 40,000 Service Family Accommodation (SFA) homes. That’s a huge commitment to making homes safer, warmer and fit for modern family life.

Patch Hacks: More Freedom to Personalise Your Home

We know making a house feel like home matters. That’s why new rules give families greater freedom to personalise SFA homes with self-funded permanent changes.
Here’s what’s new:

Green Category Enhancements

These are simple changes you can make straight away—no need to notify DIO or Pinnacle. Your Housing Officer will record them at your Move-Out appointment.
Examples include:
  • Installing shelves
  • Curtain poles, blinds and shutters
  • Coat hooks
  • Battery-powered doorbells

Amber Category Enhancements

These need a qualified tradesperson and must be approved before work starts. Notify DIO/Pinnacle via the new Permanent Enhancement Process for safety guidance.
Examples include:
  • Electric vehicle charging points
  • External power supplies and taps
  • Patios and garden decking
