The Berlin Blockade was one of the first major international crises of the Cold War. At one minute after midnight on 12 May 1949, the Soviets lifted their barricades and restored access from West Germany to Berlin. A British convoy immediately drove through, and the first train from the West reached Berlin at 5:32 that morning.

The Royal British Legion will be organising an event in the UK, at the IWM Duxford on Sunday 12th May to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Berlin Blockade.

From 10am:

There will be interactive activities for youth groups which include Scouts, Guides & Cadets. There will be a VR session which includes the Lancaster Bomber 360 experience of Berlin Blitz 1943 as well as a flight simulator for groups to learn how to take off/land a plane in Berlin. All groups will also have the opportunity to walk around the Airspace and listen to talks about some of the aircrafts used in the Berlin Blockade.

From Midday

Veterans/Guests will be invited to a lunch reception which will be followed by a service which includes background history about Berlin, readings and footage from the service being held on the same day in Berlin at Templehof Airport, organised by the MoD.The day will finish with a flypast poppy drop (TBC Weather dependent) or a poppy drop in the IWM venue.
