Changes made to the GHIC application process to accommodate Armed Forces personnel and families stationed overseas.
The Families Federations were informed by overseas service families that the GHIC application process was incompatible with a BFPO addresses and required proof of a UK address. The issue was raised with the NHS Business Service Authority by the Army Families Federation on behalf of the three services.
Changes to the application process for personnel and families overseas
As a result, the NHS Business Services Authority completed a review of their SOPs for serving personnel and family members applying from overseas. Following an update to the guidance for Armed Forces personnel, the application experience is now improved. Personnel and family members can can apply for a UK GHIC online with a National Insurance number and a UK or BFPO address.
If you reside at a BFPO address you must select that you live in the UK when completing the application.

What is a GHIC?
The UK GHIC replaces the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). If your EHIC is still valid you can continue to use it until it expires. You can apply for a GHIC to replace it up to 9 months before the expiry date, and we recommend you do this in plenty of time.
For Armed Forces families, your health care may be covered in the country you are assigned to. However, you may not be entitled to free healthcare when transiting through or visiting other countries. Therefore it is worthwhile applying for a free GHIC.
